"What care I how chic it be, if it not be the best for me?"
B. Altman & Co. Ad

Sometimes the leap from seeing fashion on the runways to seeing it on ourselves seems overwhelming if not downright impossible. As a retailer, image consultant and consumer, I am inspired each season by the global creative energy of international designers, however, I buy what I think my clients can realistically wear. Items that make them feel sexy, powerful, tall and slim. Comfort and ease of wear is also important, not to mention budget and lifestyle.

Key Points in Making Fashion Work for You:

1. Color - Each season features a popular palette of colors. Go crazy with trendy colors in accessories or on any part of your body, but, use color to your advantage by keeping your personal best colors around your face. Also, use color to draw attention to wear you want it. The eye is naturally drawn to bright colors ,so, depending on your body type, choose wisely.

2. Tops - The trend towards loose tops and tunics can be a beautiful, feminine topper to skinny pants and leggings….also acting as a camouflage for "tummy's". Oversize tops can also be a disaster if they are too "tent" like or if they are worn with a full skirt or pant…especially If you are full busted or petite. Look for loose tops or preferable cardigans with a shape that follows the line of your body without being "clingy".

3. Pants - A boot leg pant or jean is flattering on every figure type and will never go out of style! However, if you want to play with new shapes, the skinny and the wide-leg are both current so take your pick. If you are short or shapely, the skinny works best tucked into boots or worn with a longer tunic. Wide leg trousers are best worn with a fitted top or jacket and can really elongate the leg, enhance or create a waist and camouflage "stronger" legs. Beware, unless you are tall, a wide leg that is too wide can wipe out any body slimming benefits!!!

4. Dresses - Dresses can offer superior comfort and camouflage. For someone with a small waist and shapely hips, an empire waist is very flattering. For someone with a larger bust or torso, stay away from an empire waist and opt for a wrap dress which can create a feminine slim shape and elongate the torso. Some fear patterns but they can actually act as an additional camouflage for shapely figures!!!

Final Word Know yourself and what works for you. Be true to your coloring, body type and personality and the fashion world is your oyster.
